| 国家情報局 音声記録 対象：エゼキエル・カルビン 場所：国家情報局施設第002号 [記録 第0007号] カルビン：さて、この内容は随分と記録を先延ばししてきた。この日誌は自分でしか見ないつもりのものだが、情報とは決して安全とは言い難いことを知る者もいるだろう。言いたいのは、伝えるべきでないのかもしれない秘密ということだ。だが、全てを記録に残すため、ここで私の知ることを明かすことにした。私の知っているのは次のようなことだ。 1990年代の前半、プロジェクト・ワラタでスタイン・ライトマンは死んだ。当時はリモート・パーティシペーションや後にエックスエムと呼ばれるものに関わる実験を行っていたが、そこで事故があったのだ。 しばらくの間、私は悲しみに暮れた、同時に罪悪感にもね。だが、ライトマンの複製が形成されたのだ。一見すれば虚空から唐突にね。信じてほしいが、私と同じくらい新たなライトマンも混乱していたよ。なぜなら彼の遺体はまだ研究室の床に転がっていたのだからね。 当時は何が起こったのか分からなかったが、今思うにあれは実験中に意図せずライトマンのパターンがエックスエム・サブストレートに格納されてしまっていたのであり、虚空から現れたライトマンはエックスエム・シミュラクラだったわけだよ。 ライトマンと私はそのことを秘密にしておくことにした。国家情報局に対してもだ。ハリカルナッソスの棺に遺体を隠し、何事もなかったようにその後の研究を続けた。 むろん、これをご覧ということはシミュラクラがどのように機能するかも既にご存知のことだろう。1331日ごとに命脈尽き、リカージョンするのだ。だが、新たなシミュラクラにはそこまでの記憶はない。だが、他にも奇妙な事実はシミュラクラがリカージョンするときにはその人物が最初に死んだときの年齢になるということだ。したがって、長い年月でみれば仕事仲間に年老いない理由を説明することも困難になるということだった。 だが、ライトマンと私は彼のことを秘密にしておける手段を考え出した。10年ごとに、そろそろライトマンが決して老いぬことに疑いが生じ始めることに、しばらく彼に距離をとらせるようにしたのだ。結婚の記録を偽造したこともあるし、出生の記録も偽造した。スタイン・ライトマン2世というわけだ。そうして架空のライトマンが20代も半ばとなった頃にライトマンのシミュラクラを表に出したのだ。この世界でいえば、ライトマンの遺伝系統は同一に等しい直系のみを生み出し続けているということになるが、実際のところは数十年おきにライトマンは子孫に扮してきたということだ。 |

[PERSONAL LOG #0007]Okay, I held off on recording this message for a long time. Even though these logs are meant for my eyes only. A part of me knows that information is never truly secure. And what I'm about to say is a secret that might not be mine to tell. But for the sake of documenting all of this, I've decided to record here what I know. And what I know is this.
Back in the early 90s, during Project Waratah, Stein Lightman died, we were doing experiments involving Remote Participation and what we would eventually call XM. And there was an accident.
For a few moments, I was beside myself with grief and guilt. But then a copy of Lightman formed, seemingly out of midair. And believe me, this new Lightman was as confused as I was. Because his dead body was still lying on the lab floor.
At the time, we had no idea what happened. What we now know is that during the experiment, we accidentally stored Lightman's pattern in the XM substrate and Lightman had appeared out of thin air. That was an XM simulacrum. Lightman and I decided to keep this a secret even from the NIA. We hid his body in the casket of the Halicarnassus and continued on with our research like nothing had happened.
Of course, if you're watching this, you already know how simulacra work. Every 1331 days, they expire and recurse. And the new simulacrum has none of the memories of the ones that preceded it. The other weird thing is that when simulacra recurse, they come out the same age as when they originally died. So over a long enough timeline, it gets difficult to explain, why your colleague never seems to get any older.
But Lightman and I came up with a way to keep his situation a secret, every 10 years or so, just when Lightman's perpetual youth would begin to strain credulity. We'd send him into exile for a while. We forged records of a marriage and eventually a birth certificate. Stein Lightman the second and when the fictional Lightman Jr. Would have been in his mid 20s, we unleashed license latest simulacrum back into the world. As far as the world is concerned, the Lightman genes produce a long line of nearly identical offspring. But in reality, every few decades, Lightman assumes the identity of his own descendant.
