さてそうだな、危ないところだったよ。ストラテジック・エクスプロレーションズに追い詰められ、ニューデリー郊外で車を強奪した。奴等を振り切るにはそれしかなかったんだが、まるでテルマ&ルイーズだったよ、崖じゃなく小さな橋からではあったけど、かなりドキドキさせられたね。沈降していく車両から抜け出て、なんとか近くの寺院に辿り着いたんだ。

頭がクラクラして、困惑してるよ。僕は幸運な男だけど、今回ばかりは天使に救われた心地だね。彼女は名をジャハーンと言っていた。科学者で、その傍ら人道支援活動をしていて、困窮した者たちの守り手となっているんだ。

この場所はジャハーン家が所有していて、他にも数多く所有している。リーズン財団と呼ばれる団体傘下の全てがそうだね。リーズン財団はアメリカ合衆国へ関心を示していて、ジャハーンも幼少期にインドと合衆国とを頻繁に行き来していたんだ。このような寺院からわざわざ出て行きたいなんて思う者がいるとは思えないね、ここでの暮らしは時の流れを遡るかのようだ。

記憶があやふやだが、なぜだかわからない。ジャハーンは僕が何年も前に見掛けたワトキンスという非常勤の講師によく似ている。だが、彼女自身が否定した以上は、曖昧な記憶が冒した誤りだったと考えることにするよ。自分がシミュラクラだってことは自覚してるけど、人間と同じように感じるものだね。意識の高まりは、時として知覚を高めてくれるよ、過剰な情報を保持したときと同じようにね。混乱するんだ。

でも、ワトキンスであるかどうかに関わらずとも、ジャハーンには見掛けに勝るものがあるね。詳しくはまたお伝えするよ。

A Keeper of Broken Things

Okay, so... that was a close call. Hijacked a car in a suburb of New Delhi, Strategic Explorations in hot pursuit. Only one way to lose them... I pulled a Thelma and Louise. I mean, off a small bridge, not off a cliff. Still, though, I was pretty banged up. Climbed out of the wreck and stumbled into a nearby temple.

Still feeling light-headed... confused. I've always been lucky, but this time, I feel like I was saved by an angel. She says her name is Jahan. She's a scientist, and I guess also a part time humanitarian worker and keeper of broken things.

Jahan's family owns this place. Her family owns a lot of things. All under the umbrella of something called the Reason Foundation. The Reason Foundation has interests in the U.S., so Jahan split her childhood between India and the States. Although I don't know why anyone would ever want to leave a place like this temple. Being here is like a journey back in time.

Perception hazy. I don't know why. Jahan resembles a guest lecturer I ran across a number of years back called Watkins. But she denies it, so I'm willing to chalk that up to a mistake caused by this brain fog. I am fully aware that I'm a Simulacrum, but it feels remarkably like being human. Heightened awareness leads, in some cases, to heightened perception, which is similar to having too much data. Confusing.

But - Watkins or no - there's more to Jahan than meets the eye. More later.
