安全は確保したよ、今のところはね。スミスとその手下どもは数日おきに姿を現しては自動小銃で砂漠を無差別に撃ち尽くして去っていく。今回は私も追い詰められたと思ったんだが、なんとか通り抜けられる大穴を見つけることができたんだ。アントワーヌ・スミスは無能なのだろうか、あるいは戯れに行っているのだろうか。まだ、そのどちらなのか結論を出せずにいるよ。

さて、どこで中断してしまったんだっけ。そう、賢者プトレマイオスのことだったね。彼がサーティンマグナスであったという仮定のもとで進めていこう。さて、ダルサナ・レンズについて話すとしようか。

ポータルとはある種のレンズと僕には思える。周囲の人々の創造性や精神状態を高めるものとね。粗削りであれば相応の集光しかできず、可能性を最大限に高めるには多くの研削と研磨とを必要とするわけだ。おそらくクラウディオス・プトレマイオスはポータルの力を集約させることのできるレンズを創り出すことに気づいたんじゃないかな。

それはつまり、彼ならばできたんだろうということさ。賢者プトレマイオスの「オプティクス」に関する論文は、その初期の歴史において極めて重要な成果だ。残念ながら、ギリシャ語で書かれた原書は失われてしまっている。ラテン語に翻訳された一部が残ってはいるが、第1巻全文と第5巻の一部は完全に失われてしまっているんだ。そしてここに落とし穴があるんだが、「オプティクス」の失われた箇所にこそダルサナ・レンズが語られていたんだと思う。これが事実なのであれば、「オプティクス」のその箇所が失われてしまったのも偶然ではないと誰もがわかるよね。

Safe. For now. Smith and his goons pop up every couple days, blanket the desert with automatic weapons fire, then withdraw. This time I thought they had me dead to rights, but I found a hole in their perimeter big enough for me to slip through. Antoine Smith is either completely inept... or he's toying with me. Jury's still out on which.

Okay, where did we leave off? Right, Ptolemy the Wise. So we're operating under the assumption that he was 13MAGNUS. Now let's talk about these Darsana Lenses.

It occurs to me that a Portal is a kind of lens. It focuses and enhances the creativity and mental state of those near it. When a lens is coarse, it can only focus so much light: It takes a massive amount of grinding and polishing to maximize its potential. Maybe Claudius Ptolemy found a way to fashion lenses that could focus the power of the Portals.

And, I mean, if anybody could do it, he could. Ptolemy the Wise's treatise on 'Optics' was one of the most important works in the early history of the field. Unfortunately, the work in its original Greek was lost completely. Fragments of it survive from a Latin translation, but the entire first book and part of the fifth have been lost to history. And here's the kicker... I think the portions of 'Optics' that were lost were the portions that talked about the Darsana Lenses. And If I'm right about that... then we all know the fact that those parts of 'Optics' didn't survive was no accident.
