啓示の夜が起こり、記号学者のキャリー・キャンベルは別の道を求めてナイアンティック計画を去った。その数週間でキャリーは自らのノートを埋め尽くすシェイパーグリフを理解する試みに素晴らしい手掛かりを得た。それがどのような手掛かりかといえば、キャリーは怪奇小説作家のH.P. ラヴクラフトの作中で際立つネクロノミコンが実在する書物にもとづいたものであったと考えるに足る根拠を得たようだ。シェイパーグリフで埋め尽くされた書籍だ。そしてそれは時尽きんとするハンク・ジョンソンを助けたい彼女が望んでいた手掛かりだった。

「英雄コナン」で知られるパルプ小説家のロバート・E・ハワードはテキサス州クロスプレインズに住んでいたが、1936年6月、ハワードは母親の死期が迫ることに心を痛め、銃で自らの命を絶っている。だが、キャリー・キャンベルは生前のハワードが古代シェイパーグリフの書籍を目にする機会があったと考えたのだ。グリフを目にしたことで、彼は自滅と狂気の道を選んでしまったのだとね。さらに、ハワードはH.P.ラヴクラフトとの間で行われていた未発見の書簡があり、それはかつてのハワード邸に隠されているに違いないと考える根拠もキャリーにはあった。

1986年から年に一度、ハワードのファンたちはロバート・E・ハワード・デイというイベントで彼の博物館へ集い、その人生と作品を称えている。そして2018年には、二日間にわたるこの集いがリカージョン・アノマリーの発生する直前に執り行われていたが、クロスプレインズはそのプライマリ・アノマリーが発生した都市のひとつでもあった。ハワードとシェイパーグリフとのつながりがキャリーの考えるとおりであったならば、それは偶然の一致ではなかったのかもしれないね。

当時のハンクは頭を悩ませていたわけだが、諸君もご想像のとおりリカージョン・アノマリーへ赴いて新たなシミュラクラのためにポータルネットワークへ自らの記憶を残そうと計画し、クロスプレインズで一石二鳥の解決を図ろうとしたわけだ。それでは彼はどうして自らのドキュメンタリー番組「ノマド」でも記録を残さなかったのだろうか。次に紹介する映像がその一部だ。映像に登場する女性、ウェンディはダンレイブン財団による研究の被験者だ。わかってる、わかってるさ、ダンレイブンをまだ説明していないよね。私は未熟な語り手だが、ついてきてくれ。全てすぐにわかるだろうからね。

The Life and Death of Hank Johnson - Part 7
After the events of Epiphany Night, semiotician Carrie Campbell left the Niantic Project to pursue other endeavors. And in the intervening weeks, Carrie had gotten an intriguing lead in her quest to understand the Shaper Glyphs she'd been filling her notebook with. What lead, you ask? Carrie had reason to believe that the Necronomicon, which featured prominently in the works of horror author H.P. Lovecraft, was based on a tome that actually existed... a tome which was filled with Shaper Glyphs. And this was a lead she was hoping to get Hank Johnson's help in running down.

Pulp author Robert E. Howard - best known for creating "Conan the Barbarian" - lived and died in Cross Plain, Texas. In June of 1936, despondent over his mother's imminent death, Howard borrowed a gun and took his own life. But Carrie Campbell believed that, prior to these events, Howard had had occasion to lay eyes on the tome of ancient Shaper Glyphs... and that his exposure to the Glyphs had set him down a path of self-destructive madness. What's more, Carrie had reason to believe that there might exist lost correspondence between Howard and contemporary H.P. Lovecraft verifying this, and that said correspondence might be hidden in the house that had once been Howard's home.

Since 1986, once a year, fans of Howard have gathered in the Robert E. Howard House & Museum to celebrate the author's life and work, as part of an event called Robert E. Howard Days. And it just so happened that, in 2018, the two-day convention coincided with an impending the Recursion Anomaly Event, and that one of the primary Anomaly sites was in Cross Plains. But if Carrie was right about the Howard-Shaper Glyph connection, that may not have been a coincidence at all.

Hank had a lot on his mind just then, as you might imagine, but he was planning to participate in the Recursion Anomaly anyway to try to seed the Portal Network with memories for his new Simulacrum, so he decided to go to Cross Plains and kill two birds with one stone. And why not record another segment of his documentary series "Nomad" while he was at it? The following video is a clip of that segment. Wendy, the girl in the video, is the candidate from the Dunraven Foundation research study. I know, I know, I haven't explained Dunraven yet, I'm being a bad narrator. But just hang tight, it'll all make sense soon.
