エキゾチックマターの存在に対する証明が世界の諜報機関上層部に伝わり始めると、XMの研究に特化した多数の企業があらゆる場所に現れた。それらの全容については今後の投稿でまた詳しく語っていこうと思うが、まずはこの分野の先駆けのひとつであった、IQテック・リサーチ社について見ていこう。
IQテックはワシントンDCに拠点を置く、心理戦および非対称戦争を専門とする請負業者である。IQテックは度々国防総省と契約を結んでおり、また偶然にも2015年にはハンク・ジョンソンの雇用者であった。その年の5月、IQテックはハンクを心理作戦の請負人としてアフガニスタンへ派遣した。そして彼がアズマティと名乗る男に初めて出会ったのは、その渦中のことであった。アズマティはカブール出身の古物商だったが、ハンクはいずれ友と呼ぶことになるこの男について、さらに多くを知ることとなる。
その頃ハンクはエキゾチックマターを認識しておらず、自身がセンシティブであることにも気づいていなかった。だが彼がヒンドゥークシュ山脈のとあるパワースポットに引き寄せられていると感じた事はわかっていた。アズマティはハンクに、その地には怪物が住むという地域の伝説があることを伝えた。だが、あらゆる神話の中に葬られたものこそは真実の核であるとハンクは考えていたため、アズマティの警告はその場所を調査しようというハンクの願望を煽ったに過ぎなかった。そこでハンクとその新たな道連れの友とは、連れ立ってヒンドゥークシュ山脈のアノマラスゾーンへと出かけたわけだ。
この話にも関連してくる事なので、ここでXMアノマリー事象と別種のアノマラスゾーンとの微妙な違いについて行を割くべきであろう。XMアノマリーはイングレス・スキャナーのユーザーが大規模な結集をすることにより発生する傾向があり、未来の事象を形作る事が可能である。対してアノマラスゾーンは、特定の重要なXMポータルの周囲に存在する傾向にある。アノマラスゾーンは活性期と非活性期のサイクルを持つが、活性時には予測不可能なXM関連の影響をもって発生する。
ハンクとアズマティがアフガンのアノマラスゾーンに入った際に何が起きたのか、今の私にはわかっている。だがそれを明らかにするのは、まだ先のお楽しみとして取り置いておこう。ハンクは3日の間行方不明となり、その後米兵の一団によって発見された。ひとまずはそれで充分だろう。国防総省はすぐにハンクから報告を受け、その文書の内容は後に機密解除となった。その記録の最初のページをこの次の投稿で共有する。この作戦のさらなる詳細はそこで確認できる。

The Life and Death of Hank Johnson - Part 2
Since proof of the existence of Exotic Matter began penetrating the highest echelons of the global intelligence community, a number of corporations have cropped up around the world that specialize in XM research. I'll discuss all of them in more detail in a future post, but for the moment, let's take a look at one in particular that was ahead of the curve in this field: IQTech Research.
IQTech is a Washington D.C.-based contractor specializing in Psychological Operations and Asymmetric Warfare. IQTech frequently contracts with the Department of Defense, and they also happened to be Hank Johnson's employer in 2015. In May of that year, IQTech dispatched Hank to Afghanistan as a PsyOps contractor. And it was in that capacity that he first encountered a man called Azmati. Azmati was an antiquities dealer from Kabul, but Hank would go on to find out that there was a lot more to the man he would one day call friend.
Hank wasn't aware of Exotic Matter at the time and did not yet realize he was a Sensitive, but he did know that he felt drawn to a particular Power Spot in the Hindu Kush mountains. Azmati relayed to Hank that, where he was bound, local legend held that monsters dwelled. But Hank believes that buried within every myth is a kernel of truth, so Azmati's warning only reaffirmed Hank's desire to investigate the site. So together, Hank and his newfound ally set out for an Anomalous Zone in the Hindu Kush mountains.
I should probably take a second here to make a subtle distinction between XM Anomaly Events, and other kinds of Anomalous Zones, because it's relevant this line of inquiry. XM Anomaly Events tend to be triggered by large concentrations of Ingress Scanner users, and have the ability to shape future events. Anomalous Zones, on the other hand, tend to be located around XM Portals of certain importance. Anomalous Zones cycle through periods of activity and inactivity, but when active, they erupt with unpredictable XM-related effects.
Now, I know what happened to Hank and Azmati when they entered the Afghan Anomalous Zone, but I'm going to be defer that reveal until a future post, purely for dramatic effect. For the time being, suffice it to say that Hank went missing for a period of about three days, after which he was picked up by a brigade of U.S. soldiers. The DoD debriefed Hank shortly thereafter, and the contents of that document have since been declassified. I'm sharing the first page of the transcript right after this post, so you can check that out to get more details on this operation.
