記号学者キャリー・キャンベルについて、これまで触れていなかったとすれば私の至らぬところだ。サインとシンボルの専門家であるキャリーは、最初からセンシティブであることが認知されていた数少ないナイアンティック計画研究者のひとりである。XMの曝露はキャリーの中に謎めいた記述言語として顕れ、以来それは「シェイパー・グリフ」と呼ばれてきた。グリフは神経言語学的なウィルスであり、人の精神に直接語りかける共通言語であるとキャリーは考えている。彼女はまた、この言語はシェイパーが彼らのオーダードデータ・メッセージを人類へ伝えるためのメカニズム、つまりシェイパーの啓示を人間が受け取るためのインターフェースであるとも考えている。
シェイパー・グリフに関するキャリーの研究は啓示の夜、パワーキューブの爆発によるXM波が彼女をトランス状態に陥れた際、脳裏に去来した。その間彼女はひたすら研究室のいたるところに、未だ発見されていなかったシェイパー・グリフを書きなぐっていた。その夜以来新たなシェイパー・グリフはあらゆる形で予期せぬ場所に顕れており、キャリーはそれらを追跡し記録し続けている。
だが最近、キャリーはグリフがもたらすメッセージがことごとく不吉なものであることに恐怖を感じ始めた。キャリーの同僚であるハンク・ジョンソンは太古のXMパワースポットを記録する活動の中で、かつて繁栄し前触れなく滅亡したポータルを中心とする文明について、彼の領分を超えるものに遭遇した。そしてどのケースにもひとつだけ共通することがあった。古代のシェイパー・グリフの存在である。ひとつのグリフ・シーケンス、キャリーが文明全体に対する自壊コードだと考えるに至ったものが、彼女の夢を襲い始めた。キャリーが行動を起こしていなければ、我々も知るとおりオペレーション・カサンドラは文明の終わりとなっていたかも知れない。そのためカサンドラ・アノマリーのその日、キャリーはレジスタンスを支援するためにリンツを訪れ、我々に害をなすと考えられたエクソジェナス・エンティティを食い止めんとした。そして我々が皆ここにいるということは、彼女がそれに成功したということであろう！
これからリンクする次の投稿で、ナイアンティック・ラボによるオペレーション・カサンドラをまとめた動画に彼女の様子を見ることができる。キャリーが自らの腕に描いているシンボルが、私が述べたグリフの例だ。オペレーション・カサンドラの間キャリーはおそらく致命的な危険にさらされていたという噂があったが、彼女は無事に現れたように思われる。少なくとも、今のところは。

I'd be remiss at this point if I didn't take some time to talk about semiotician Carrie Campbell. An expert in signs and symbols, Carrie was one of the few Niantic Project researchers who realized she was a Sensitive out of the gate. In Carrie, XM exposure manifested as visions of a mysterious written language that have since been dubbed "Shaper Glyphs." Carrie believes the Glyphs are a neurolinguistic virus, a universal language that speaks directly into the human mind. She also thinks this language is the mechanism by which the Shapers convey their ordered-data messages to human beings; The biological interface by which humans receive Shaper instructions.
Carrie's research into the Shaper Glyphs came to a head on Epiphany Night, when the wave of XM from the Power Cube explosion sent her into a trance. While in this state, she proceeded to scribble as-yet-undiscovered Shaper Glyphs all over her lab. Since that night, new Shaper Glyphs have been manifesting in all manner of unexpected places, and Carrie's been keeping track of them in her journal.
But recently, Carrie has begun to fear that the message the Glyphs are carrying is altogether ominous. In his efforts to catalogue the XM Power Spots of antiquity, Carrie's colleague Hank Johnson has come across more than his share of once-thriving Portal-centric civilizations that died off suddenly, and without warning. And in every case, there was only one common denominator: the presence of ancient Shaper Glyphs. A certain Glyph sequence began to haunt Carrie's dreams, one which she came to believe was a self-destruct code for an entire civilization. If Carrie didn't act, Operation Cassandra could have been the end of civilization as we know it. To that end, Carrie traveled to Linz on the day of the Cassandra Anomaly to help the Resistance, and to stave off the exogenous entities that she believed meant us harm. And we're all still here, so I guess that means she succeeded!
You can get a few glimpses of her in the Niantic Labs Operation Cassandra recap video, which I'll be linking to in the post right after this one. The symbols you see Carrie drawing on her arms are examples of the Glyphs I've been talking about. Rumor has it that Carrie may have been in mortal danger during Operation Cassandra, but she seems to have emerged unscathed. For now, at least.
