オリバー・リントン＝ウルフ博士は、ナイアンティック計画の最も輝かしき研究者のひとりである。だが彼の奔放なる傲慢さが、最も危険な人物たらしめてもいる。

XMを原動力とする技術、XMオブジェクトを生み出す方法を最初に見いだしたのはリントン＝ウルフだ。これまでの彼によるXM研究分野への最大の業績は、イングレス・スキャナーの開発であろう。XMポータルの検出および相互干渉を可能にするプログラム。さらに目覚ましいことに、そのプログラムをあらゆるスマートフォンで機能させる方法を見いだしたのだ！この直後に、リントン＝ウルフがスキャナーの使い方をエージェントに教育している、国家情報局のトレーニング映像の漏洩と思われる動画を投稿する。安全のために重要なことだが、XMスキャナーを扱うことができるのはセンシティブのみだ。
動画中でリントン＝ウルフはあまり詳細に触れてはいないが、イングレス・エージェントがポータルを「ハック」する時、実際にはポータルを自身の陣営へと揃えている。私の理解する範囲では、レジスタンスに変調されたポータルはエクソジェナスの影響を受けない「より安全」な周波数へとXM出力を調整する。一方エンライテンドに変調されたポータルは、いわゆるシェイパー──エキゾチックマターのオーダードデータ・パターンの背後に存在すると考えられている、異次元の存在──からのメッセージを増幅する。
XMスキャナー技術が偶発的に漏洩したのか、あるいは国家情報局が意図したものなのかについては依然曖昧な部分である。だが我々も知る通り、スキャナーがアプリストアに登場した時、国家情報局のナラティブ・マネジメント担当であるケンドラ・オーウェンズは、それがただのゲーム──イングレスという名のゲームであるというカバーストーリーを定着させた。モバイルアプリ「イングレス」の配布元はナイアンティック・ラボというゲーム会社であった。ナイアンティック・ラボと国家情報局との関係の実態は現時点で不明であるが、それを理解する事は間違いなく私のタスクリストの上位にある。
リントン＝ウルフ博士の傲慢さ、知識に対する尽きることなき欲こそが、ナイアンティック計画をほぼ完全に閉鎖させ、研究者達の人生を取り返しがつかない程に変えてしまった、あの事件を引き起こしたのだ。あるものはそれを強烈なる目覚めの時、「啓示の夜」と呼んだ。だがあるものはそれを「ナイアンティックの災厄」と呼ぶ。その夜、実際に何が起きたのか？遠からずそこへ立ち返ることとなろう...。

Dr. Oliver Lynton-Wolfe was one of the Niantic Project's most brilliant researchers. But his unbridled arrogance also made him one of the most dangerous.
Lynton-Wolfe was the first to figure out how to create XM Objects, XM-fueled technology. Probably his biggest contribution to the field of XM research to date was the creation of his Ingress Scanner, a program capable of detecting and interacting with XM Portals. Even more impressive, he found a way to get the program to work on any smartphone! Right after this post, you'll find a video which I suspect is a leaked NIA training vid of Lynton-Wolfe teaching agents how to use the Scanner. Important safety tip: Only Sensitives are capable of using the XM Scanner.
Lynton-Wolfe doesn't go too deep into the details in the video, but when an Ingress agent "hacks" a Portal, what they're really doing is aligning that Portal to their particular faction. As far as I understand it, Resistance-aligned Portals modulate the XM output to a "safer" frequency that is free of exogenous influence. Whereas Enlightened-aligned Portals amplify the messages of the so-called Shapers, the extradimensional beings some believe are behind the ordered-data patterns of Exotic Matter.
There's still some ambiguity about whether the XM Scanner tech was leaked accidentally, or if the NIA did it deliberately. But what we do know is, when the Scanner hit the app store, the NIA's Narrative Management Specialist Kendra Owens perpetuated a cover story that it was just a game; a game called Ingress. The publisher of the Ingress mobile app is a game company called Niantic Labs. The exact nature of the relationship between Niantic Labs and the NIA is unknown at this time, but figuring that out is definitely high on my to-do list.
It was Dr. Lynton-Wolfe's arrogance and insatiable hunger for knowledge that led to an accident that almost got the Niantic Project shut down for good, and changed the lives of the Niantic Project researchers forever. For some, it was a powerful moment of awakening; an Epiphany Night. But others would call it the Niantic Calamity. What actually happened that night? We'll get back to that soon enough...
