Learn the fundamentals of Ingress. Dr. Oliver Lynton-Wolfe will walkthrough how to use your Ingress Prime scanner to hack and control Portals - which are phenomena typically found at places of artistic or historical interest, as well as how to collect XM (or Exotic Matter) for in-game actions.
Learn to Hack and Control Portals in Ingress

OLW: I'm Dr. Oliver Lynton-Wolfe, lead technology researcher for the Niantic Project and creator of the Ingress XM scanner. My goal today is to introduce to you how to use this marvel of technology to hack and control Portals.
OLW: Portals are phenomena that are typically found at points of artistic or historical interest. The reason why is above your classification level, but what you do need to know is that Exotic Matter, or XM enters our world through these Portals.
OLW: Your Ingress scanner can contain XM and it is the source of its powers. Taking actions with the scanner drains to this XM, so be on the lookout around you.
OLW: Your scanner will automatically collect nearby XM particles. There is currently an unexplainable code injection in the scanner that allows Agents to align the Portals to different frequencies of Factions as they are called by some. We're working on a solve for that, but in the meantime, we need the field research to continue, so you will need to choose a Faction to operate the scanner.
OLW: The Portal states, at which three are currently known, are represented by different colors in the scanner. Blue for Resistance, green for Enlightened and white for neutral or uncontrolled.
OLW: Interacting with Portals requires a number of specialized objects that are contained within the XM itself. These objects can be obtained by Hacking Portals.
OLW: The scanner can hack any Portal, regardless of its state. All you have to do is walk up to the Portal, select it with your scanner and press Hack.

OLW: Among the items you are likely to receive from a hack are Resonators.
<ADA: Resonator Acquire>
OLW: Objects that can amplify the output of a Portal.
OLW: If you encounter a neutral Portal, you can claim it for your Faction by deploying a Resonator on it.
OLW: If you encounter a Portal already controlled by your Faction, it may have free Resonator slots available. You can add your own Resonators to those slots or even upgrade existing Resonators if you have access to higher-level inventory.
OLW: We've found that more powerful Portals produce better hack output. In addition, it makes a Portal more resilient to attack.
OLW: If you encounter a Portal controlled by the opposing Faction, you won't be able to deploy on it. It will first have to be neutralized by destroying the enemy's Resonators.
OLW: I'll cover that procedure in the next briefing.
