最後の手順は最初の逆だ。

運転手が気づくことはなかった。右側後方に真横から衝突した。私の乗るタクシーは勢いよく横滑りすると道路脇に設置された消火栓にぶつかって停止した。座ったまま呆然としていると脇の扉がこじ開けられ、手袋をはめた手が私の襟首を掴んだかと思えば強引に引っ張られた。

そして気づいたときには路上に腹ばいで倒れていた。後頭部を雨が叩いていた。そして身体が持ち上げられ、狭苦しい場所へ乱暴に押し込められたのだった。不意にがちゃがちゃと金属音が鳴り、一切の光が途絶えた。幸いにもそれは雨もであった。エンジンが始動し自動車が動き始めると、この新たな住まいがトランクの中なのだとわかった。

徐々に暗闇に眼が慣れてくると、我が身に起きたことの手掛かりがどこかにないか周囲に目を走らせた。そしてポケットへ懐中電灯を入れていたことに思い至った。引っ張り出してどうにか周囲を確認したが、何もなかった。だが、内側にまたもや奇妙なメッセージが走り書きされていることに気づいたのだ。

My driver never saw him coming. T-boned in the right rear quarter. Our cab spun out quickly and came to a stop against a fire hydrant at the corner of the road. I was sitting dazed when my door was wrenched open and a pair of gloved hands grabbed my lapels and pulled hard.

I found myself face down on the pavement, rain pounding the back of my head, then felt more hands lifting me and pushing me roughly into a confined space. With a sudden clank, all the lights were gone, but thankfully so was the rain. An engine started up and I identified my new home as a trunk as the car started moving.

My eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness and I looked around for anything that might provide a hint as to what was going on. Then I remembered the flashlight in my pocket. Pulling it out, I checked around for any way out. Nothing. But I did find another strange message scrawled on the inside of the compartment.
