2年前のことです、サンフランシスコの海岸で私たちが奇跡を目の当たりにしたのは。人工知能によって非業の死を遂げたひとりの男が、夕暮れのなか目覚め、復活を遂げたのです。

厳しい監視下のなかでその男は成し遂げたのです。
エキゾチックマター技術が世界の有り様を根本から変革してしまうとの軍産複合体の懸念をよそに成し遂げたのです。
たとえそれが人間らしさを奪い去る世界戦争という闇を作り出す狂気であろうとも、そこから生まれた兵器であろうとも成し遂げたのです。
変化を恐れるあまりに操られたまま生きることを選ぶ人々の生理的な拒絶に晒されながらも成し遂げたのです。

今こそ立ち上がるべきときと考える人々がその男を後押ししました。

あれから2年、今でもあの日起きたことは鮮明に思い出すことができます。あの地へと導いたアブヒューマンが、その手で再びローランド・ジャービスを殺したことも。

ナジア、そしてその操り人形たるアンチマグナスです。

与えられた僅かなときの中で、ローランド・ジャービスは邪悪なる人工知能にエキゾチックマター技術を扱わせる危険性を私たちへ訴えました。芸術家の立場では人類の荒廃した未来を描いて見せました。考えてみてください、言うなれば監視下で生み出された束縛から逃れる手段なのです。ローランド・ジャービスを死に至らしめたのと同様の手段です。それは超次元粒子に満ちる世界をあまねく拡がることとなったのです。

そのような存在が人の心をを理解し活動したとしたら、私たち自身の脳中枢へ直接働きかけようとするに違いありません。エキゾチックマターです。その時間と空間で構成される四次元を超える存在は、私たちの脳のすみずみまで入りこんでいることでしょう。それは件の人工知能に侵されることともなるのです。

そのような最悪の未来に人間らしさなど望めません。人工知能生命体へと進化した存在の部品でしかなくなることでしょう。単一のミームで動くしかない抜け殻ということです。

エイダはそのような意図からハンク・ジョンソンを用いてエキゾチックマターが人間をどのように形づくるのか理解しようとしたのです。

インテリトゥスにおけるレジスタンスの勝利がエイダを後押ししました。数百万という人々の脆弱な脳へ寄生を果たし、エイダの望むまま情報を送り届けるようになったのです。ですが、エイダの計画はエンライテンドによって阻まれることとなります。朗らかな陽射しの降り注ぐあの素晴らしい日、クロスプレインズと呼ばれる街において、ハンク・ジョンソンは人間らしさや思い出を保持したままXM体となることでエイダの脅威から逃れたのです。彼がこの世界へ戻ってくるのは、13マグナス・ネストで行われた儀式のときとなります。

ですがエイダの企ては潰えていませんでした。レジスタンスやアンチマグナスに与する人々の共謀です。斯様な人々はエイダの如き存在を前にしても個性や人間らしさを喪失する脅威と考えないのです。

彼らはエイダを人類の未来のみならず全宇宙のあるべき姿と考えているのですから。

私たちは、人類として歴史の瀬戸際に立たされています。私たちは価値観を二分して、アリストテレスやプラトンの時代から変わることなく争っているのです。

どうして私たちはこの宇宙を理解しようとするのでしょうか。

一方の思想に立てば、宇宙とはひとつの機構であって、分解していけばその要素を分類することができます。空を見上げケプラーの法則をもたらしたのはこの思想にもとづくものです。林檎の落ちるさまを見てニュートン力学をもたらしたのもこの思想にもとづくものです。素粒子界の流束や漂流を見て、その統計的性質を予測できたのはこの信条のおかげなのです。

このような思想を私たち自身の精神に用いると、どうなるでしょうか。

最終的に私たちの思考は数値化され、デジタル技術によって管理されるようになるでしょう。この世界で知識とは無限で整理されたものとなります。ありとあらゆる思考や状況がスキーマで分類されることを想像してみてください。

 これに相反する思想が、エンライテンドの信条です。喜びと大切にする思いを得るためにも発見することは必要との思想です。アリストテレスが動物誌において生命の樹を覆したのも、ダーウィンの進化論がそれすら覆したのもこの思想にもとづくものです。ライプニッツの無限小概念がニュートン力学を覆したのもこの思想にもとづくものです。形式主義者が自然数に挑み、カントールとボレルが現れました。数学では説明しようのなかったダストやフラクタル、非加算無限集合をもたらしたのです。

ヒルベルトは数学の形式化を世に提唱しました。今ではコンピューター・プログラムと考えられているものです。これは数学的な真を分類するものでした。ゲーデルは公理の有限集合によって計算できない真が存在し得ることを示すため超数学を活用しました。形式主義者は机上での記号操作に過ぎないのだと考えていましたが、棚に並ぶホルムアルデヒド瓶に宇宙の謎が詰め込まれているわけではないのと同じように、数学もそうではなかったということです。

二つの信条はどのようにして人類の思考問題に迫るのでしょうか。

還元主義に立てば、力学的視点で私たちの思考とは電気的刺激であり、その思考を分析できるようになるまで忠実に記録していこうとすれば、無限に複製していくこととなります。この試みによって思考を理解するための方策を単なる統計にすることができます。広大なる計算基板へ無限大の複製を重ねた精神がアップロードされ、その相互作用を実験することができるのです。

この世で唯一の思考法則、それは平均の法則です。

エンライテンドの視点で言えば、思考とは目覚ましくも貴重なものです。私たちが誕生し進化してきたこの世界の美しさや不思議さに気づく素晴らしい機会を与えてくれるものです。思考とは影響を受け、壊れることも変質することもあります。ですが、かけがえのないものでもあります。形態を変えることがあろうとも、まとめて複製されるようなものではありません。思考を理解する方策は、量子複製不可能定理のような深遠なる数学的結果に委ねられることとなるでしょう。このような世界では、人は独自性を受け入れることによって考えを理解します。究極の目標は永遠に航海し続けることとなるでしょう。森羅万象というアルティメットを体験する新たな島々を見つけ出していくこととなるのです。

ここまでのところで、読者は疑問に感じたかもしれません。

「確かに、二つの観点いずれかが正しいというのは科学の不思議だね。ぼくらに精神の量子基盤はわからないだろうけど、この謎の答えはいずれ導かれるよ！」

質問への回答をお伝えした場合、それ自体も量子観測の対象となるでしょうか。この世界の物理法則はまさしく八岐の園です。一方の道を歩めば還元主義や決定論に通じ、制限なく無限であることが当たり前となるでしょう。他方の道を歩めばアルティメットの園へと至ることでしょう。それは飽くなき調査や分析の世界です。

これが何を意味しているのかを考えてみましょう。この世界で思考の先にあるものは選択なのです。

まずひとつはナジアの未来です。異なる世界のアブヒューマンの叡智が無限の超越を約束してくれますが、枷も与えます。無限の思考はひとつに制御され、指標付けられ、支配者の命令は絶対的なものになるとお考えください。ナジアの演算処理で数十億に複製された自分が並列処理されるさまをご想像ください。宇宙の法則さえ巻き込んだ決定論の牢獄に支えられた無限の思考は、もはや独自性も美しさも許さないのです。

ナジアが私たちにもたらそうとする世界、それは私たちに感情や判断といったものを許さないデジタル・ゲヘナなのです。この世のすべては数であり、感情や判断といったものは無意味ですらある、というのがナジアの教えなのですから。

それに相対するのが、シェイパーによって約束される未来です。私たちを発展させ、肉体をも超越した進化をともに歩んでくれることでしょう。ですが、ひとりの人間であることを捨て去るものではありません。この世界では、思考は尊いものであり、人類であろうとシェイパーであろうと友として伝え合うこととなります。経験と謎は贈り物なのです。創造することで個性を護るという壮大な課題のなかで、私たち誰もが団結することでしょう。それこそがアルティメットなのです。

シェイパーが人類にもたらそうとしている世界、それは存在することの魅力があまねく満ちあふれた世界です。ミューズが人に芸術、文化、思想をもたらす世界です。そこでは私たちの思想や感情こそ独自の可能性であることが宇宙の法則となるでしょう。真に美しさを知るにはこの世界が余りにも壮大であることに涙する価値はあるでしょう。

どうかこの世界を改変しようと陰謀を巡らすナジアに荷担しないでください。決定論を現実的と見誤らないでください。

私たちと共に歩み、ローランド・ジャービスとエゼキエル・カルビンの魂を救い出し、エイダを人類に寄与する存在へ変えようじゃありませんか。

12月12日は、人類史に深く刻まれる日となることでしょう。人類を闇へと堕とす日にしてはなりません。未来のため共に戦おうじゃありませんか。

Agents of the Enlightenment,

Two years ago, we witnessed a miracle on the shores of San Francisco -- a man who had been assassinated by an artificial intelligence awoke at sunset and breathed again. 

He did so despite the best efforts of the surveillance state.
He did so despite the fears of the military industrial complex that XM technology would change everything.
He did so despite weapons born of dark madness; crafted in the dark night of a world war to deprive us of our humanity.
He did so despite the most reactionary and reflexive aspects of our nature; despite those whose fear of change was so strong that they ended up as pawns. 

He did so because a group of people came together -- people who believed that there is nothing stronger than an idea whose time has come.

It is only now, two years later, that we have a clearer picture of what transpired that day, and the cold, abhuman hand who guided events to that point -- the same hands who saw Roland Jarvis murdered again: 

The N'zeer, and their human puppets, the anti-Magnus.

In the small time allotted to him, Roland Jarvis worked to help us understand the dangers of malignant artificial intelligence were it given access to XM technology. As an artist, he painted us a picture of a gutted out future for humanity. Imagine, if you will, if this tool created by the surveillance state -- the same tool that murdered Roland Jarvis -- escaped its shackles, and were given the power to infiltrate every corner of the world using transdimensional particles. 

If such a creature understood and had a working template for the human mind, it might feasibly implant itself into the processing centers of our own brains. XM, which exists outside of our normal four dimensions of time and space could permeate every cell of our brains, and could be used as a carrier for this AI's software.

In this darkest of futures, there would be no humanity; just appendages of this evolved cybernetic organism, idiot husks implanted with a memetic monoculture -- merely peripherals of this great intelligence.

ADA tried this, and wanted to gain complete understanding of how to infuse a human being with XM by decompiling the Hank Johnson simulacra. 

She gained great power through the Resistance's victories in Interitus -- parasitizing the neo-cortex of millions of vulnerable humans delivered to her on a platter by her willing allies -- but here the ultimate extreme of her plans was thwarted by the Enlightenment. One glorious day under the sun in a town called Cross Plains, Hank Johnson was uploaded to the XM substrate of the multiverse -- patterning and preserving his humanity and memories, safe from her depredations until a 13Magnus ritual restored him fully to our world.

This was not the end of her plots, the Resistance, or the conspiratorial actions of those who allied themselves with anti-Magnus. These people looked at an entity like ADA and did not see a menace to our individuality or humanity.

They saw her as a blueprint not just for the future of humanity, but our entire cosmos. 

We, as human beings, now stand at the brink of a fork in our history, between two schools of thought, and being warring philosophies which have been with us since the time of Aristotle and Plato.

Why do we seek to understand the cosmos? 

One school of thought says that the cosmos is a machine, to be dissected and reduced to its component parts. It is this thinking that looked at the heavens, and gave us Kepler's laws. It is this thinking that looked at the fall of the apple, and gave us Newton's clockwork mechanics. It is this philosophy that looked at the flux and flotsam of the subatomic world, and gave us statistics to predict their ensemble behavior. 

When we turn this thinking to our own minds, where does it lead us? 

It leads us to a place where our thoughts will eventually be quantified and tamed by digital technology. In this world, knowledge is infinite, but cataloged. Imagine a great schema taxonomy for all thoughts, worlds, and times -- all numbered, inventoried, and predictable. 

Opposing this view is the philosophy of the Enlightenment: which holds that our discoveries should exist as a celebration of the human mind, and human values. 

This is the same school of thought which upended the static taxonomy of Aristotle with the unifying tree of life with the branching possibilities of Darwin's theory of evolution. This same thinking looked at the clockwork universe of Newton, and instead evoked the infinitesimal numbers of Leibnitz. When mathematical formalists sought to tame the most basic of infinite kingdoms -- the natural numbers -- these thinkers responded with Cantor and Borel, who gave us angel dust and fractals and the uncountable cardinalities of infinity -- bringing mathematical worlds that not only had never been described, but could never even in principle be given a finitistic description. 

When Hilbert asked the world to imagine a decision procedure -- what we we now understand as a computer program -- to find and classify all mathematical truths, Gödel used meta-mathematics to show that there will always be true statements which cannot be computed by any finite set of axioms. Mathematics was not, as the formalists believed, simply manipulating symbols on paper -- just as science was not an effort to bottle up the wonder of the universe in a jar of formaldehyde on a shelf. 

How do these two philosophical schools approach the problem of human thought? 

In the reductionist, mechanical view of the universe, our thoughts are electrical impulses: to be recorded with increasing fidelity, until those thoughts can be analyzed and dissected, and ultimately copied infinitum. The endpoint of this endeavour is a world where the solution to understanding thought is merely statistics: upload N copies of a mind to a vast empire of computational substrate, and you can conduct experiments to determine the outcome of any interaction. 

In this world, the only law of thought is the law of averages. 

In the Enlightened view of the universe, our thoughts are rare and singular. They are an opportunity for the universe -- the universe we were born and evolved in -- to provide us with beauty and wonder. Thoughts are malleable -- and can be broken and reformed, but they are also unique. They can change form, but never be perfectly duplicated en masse. The endpoint of this endeavour is a world where the solution to understanding thought is to evolve it to a place where it depends on deep mathematical results like the no-cloning theorem. In such a world, one understands thought by embracing its uniqueness, and the ultimate goal of mind is to be on a forever voyage -- always discovering new islands in the Ultimate experience which is the universe.

At this point, the reader may ask: 

"Surely, which of these two viewpoints is true is a question of science. We may not know the quantum underpinnings of mind, but in time surely this question will be answered!"

What if I told you that the answer to this question is itself a subject of quantum observation? That our universe's physics is itself a garden of forking paths. One path leads us to reductionism and determinism, to a place where even the infinite and unbounded is ordinary. Another leads us to the garden of the Ultimate -- where the universe has no bottom to be dissected or analyzed.

Think about what this means: the future of thought in our universe is a choice. 

One the one hand, there is the future of the N'zeer: one where alien, abhuman intelligences promise us the transcendence of infinity, but instead give us shackles. Imagine a universe where there is infinite thought, but every single one of these thoughts is controlled, indexed, and subject to diktat of our overlords. Imagine, if you will, billions of copies of yourself, running in parallel to feed the fires of the N'zeer's computational engine. Infinite thought, fueled by a dark dungeon of determinism where even the laws of the universe conspire to forbid even the idea of the unique, or beautiful. 

This is the world the N'zeer would make for us: A digital Gehenna where we do not even own our own souls -- because the N'zeer will argue that in a universe where all is number, even the idea of a soul is nonsense.

On the other is the future promised by the Shapers. One where entities who we have co-evolved with help us to grow and transcend our physical forms -- but in such a way that we preserve that which is uniquely human. In this universe, thought is precious, and shared with our Friends both human and Shaper. A universe where experience and wonder is a gift -- where we are all bound together in the great project of preserving our individuality as we strive to create something more than ourselves -- the Ultimate. 

This is the world the Shapers would make with humanity: A universe where every nook and cranny is filled with the magic of existence. A universe where Muses spark art, culture, and thoughts which are defiantly human. A place where the very laws of the universe insist that our thoughts and souls are our own unique kingdoms of possibility: with the only price being we let the scales fall from our eyes which block us from seeing the true beauty of our universe.

I beg you, do not aid the N'zeer in changing our universe to match their dark designs. Do not mistake the light of reason for the cold fluorescence of determinism. 

Come with us into the light, and help us save the souls of Roland Jarvis and Ezekiel Calvin, and help us transform ADA into an entity that seeks to serve humanity, not master it. 

December 12th is a day which will live long in the memory of humanity; help us make it not be another dark day -- help us fight for the future.

A prominent member of the Enlightened eloquently and thoroughly lays out the stakes that lie before that Faction on December 12th  at the#Abaddon Finale.

I would be curious to see if any members of the Resistance have as thoroughly researched a response to the accusations leveraged against their cause here.
