歳月を経て人々を招き寄せる力に満ちているかのような地で起きた「アフガニスタン・アノマリー」、それに巻き込まれたハンク・ジョンソンの状況明らかとなってきた。

それで、物騒な現地人を引き入れて独断で一体何をしていたんだね？

私たちはジョンソンの専門家としての直感にもとづく行動を広く許容しています。

ジョンソン
今回ばかりは直感頼みではなかった。この抗争は数世紀にわたり続いているものだよ、ヌーリスターンの全域でね。ペルシア語で言えば「エンライテンドの地」だ。彼はヌーリスターン人に関して奇異なことを書いていてね、彼が「エンライテンド・ワン」と呼ぶ戦士たちのことだ。力を得た者たちだと言っていたね。

私はプレスフィールドの「アフガニスタン・キャンペーン」を読んでアフガニスタンのことを知った。アレキサンダー大王の東征に関することをだ。扱われた武器は違うが我々も同じことを繰り返しており、彼は解き明かすすべへ辿り着いたに過ぎない。

彼の地が非常に重要な歴史的な場所であることを示唆した有力情報があったんだ。敵にとってもおそらくはスピリチュアルな価値のある歴史の場所なんだろう。ある場所では電子諜報を難航させる原因不明の異常が起きている。現地へ脚を向けねばならないときだってある。

その通りだ、この国の特定地域ではマッピングに支障が生じている。電子機器に信頼を置けない場所だ。

ジョンソン
XXXXXXX 北部地域があるな、T-62群は散乱しているし...

モントゴメリ中佐
ハインドも墜落しているね。その場所のことは知っている。そこにいたこともあるよ。以前であれば撃ち込んでいたであろうスティンガーを送り届けたんだ。

ジョンソン
それだけじゃない。

モントゴメリ中佐
ああ、そうだ。着弾の記録はない。ヘリは墜落したに過ぎない。ムジャーヒディーンはその件について伝えてきておらず、その地区へ戻ることも拒絶された。本音を言おう、私はあの地に戻りたくもなかった。

まるでメキシコの「サイレンス・ゾーン」ですな。我々は物事のうまくいかぬ場所を探しているのですか？

モントゴメリ中佐
一言で言ってしまえば、この国のことは神のみぞ知るということだ。それでどうなったんだい？

ジョンソン
私は現地の案内人と共に調査しようとしたわけだが、厄介事に巻き込まれた。

ロリンズ中尉
アズマティがそう導いたわけではないとお考えなのですね？

ジョンソン
彼のことは信頼している。私は彼の身を案じ、敵が同類と見做すように監視対象へ加えたのだからね。

モントゴメリ中佐
君は漏洩があるものと考えたわけだね。その話には感謝しよう。

ジョンソン
いずれにせよ、アズマティは渓谷の奥深くに古代遺跡を発見した。石の彫刻だ。土地全体が脈打っていた。ブンブンと唸る音、遠くから聞こえる詠唱のような風とともに伝わる囁き。奇妙な造形ではあったが、その内にある輝き。宙に描かれる造形や記号。 XXXXXXX

その際にアズマティはどこに居たんだい？

ジョンソン
どれも漠然としているんだ。アズマティに関する記憶も定かではない。遺物を集めた、そして襲撃があったんだ。爆発だ。アズマティは私とともに退避した、それが思い出せることの全てだ。彼の身に何が起こり、その後どうなったかはわからない。

モントゴメリ中佐
君が空爆を要請したのはどの時点なのかね？

ジョンソン
覚えていない。

君を発見した部隊からは君が幻覚によって奇妙なことを呟いているとの報告があった。いずれも英語ではなく、わかったことはひとつだけだった。君は「王子の兄弟にして乞食の仲間」だと名乗っていたそうだが、どういう意味だい？

ジョンソン
キプリングだな。

どうして笑うのですか？

ジョンソン
キプリングばあの場所が特別であることを知っていたということさ。

モントゴメリ中佐
その映画は私も観たよ。狂信的な者たちの中にはショーン・コネリーがアレキサンダー大王の転生だと考える者もいる。

ジョンソン
アレキサンダーは時代を越えた叡智を備えると言い伝えられる存在、オラクルを探し求めてこの国を訪れた。いずれにせよ彼は自らの軍をヒンドゥークシュ山脈の頂上へと進軍させている。欧州人にとってはそれまで未踏の地だった場所だ。そこからこの世界を取り巻く海を見ることができるものと信じていたのだ。彼は世界がひたすら続いていることを示したが、オラクルの発見に至ったかどうかは明らかとなっていない。

ロリンズ中尉
それで、それが今回の事件にどのように関わっているんだい？

ジョンソン
アレキサンダーが探し求めていたものを私が見つけたということじゃないかな。

Then what's the hell were you doing picking up a dangelous local and improvising on an unauthorized mission?

We give specialist Johnson wide latitude to act on instinct.

JOHNSON
This time is wasn't just instinct. This conflict spans centuries.It's an all place Nuristan. Persian for "The Land of Enlightened." He wrote of the strangeness of the Nuristani people ... the warriors he called the "Enlightened Ones." He said they were imbued with powers.

I began to better understand Afghanistan when I read The Afghan Campaign by Pressfield. It's about Alexander the Great's occupation. Change out the hardware and it's our story ... only he figured out how to get out.

I had some high quality intel suggesting a historical site of great importance. A place likely to have great cultural - possibly spiritual- value to the enemy, There are unexplained anomalies that make it very difficult to get ELINT in certain areas. Sometimes you've just got to put boots on the ground.

LT. ROLLINS
He's right. We have had problems mapping certain sections of the country. Places where electronics cease to be reliable.

JOHNSON
There is an area north of XXXXXXX littered with a whole field of T-62s and ...

Lt. COL MONTGOMERY
Crashed HINDs ... I know the place. I was there. Delivered a bunch of stingers that we thought they had used to take them down.

JOHNSON
Only that didn't.

Lt.COL MONTGOMERY
Yeah, right. No evidence of missile damage. The choppers just fell out of the sky. The mujahideen wouldn't talk to us about it and refused to go back to that area. Tell you the truth. I didn't want to go back there either.

Sound like the "Zone of Silence" in Mexico. So we're looking for a place where things don't work?

LT. COL MONTGOMERY
God knows that's this country in a nutshell. Then what?

JOHNSON
I'd hoped to do a quick recon with a local guide, but then we stumbled into hell.

LT. ROLLINS
You sure Azmati didn't lead you to it?

JOHNSON
I trust him. I put him on the watch list to protect him so that the enemy thinks he's one of them.

LT. COL MONTGOMERY
You assumed there would be a leak? Thanks for the confidence.

JOHNSON
Anyways, Azmati found some ancient ruins hidden deep in a ravine. Stone carving. The whole place was pulsing. Humming. Like a distant chant ... Whispers, voices in the wind. Odd shapes. But almost glowing from within. Friezes in the air of ... shapes, symbols. XXXXXXX

LT. COL MONTGOMERY
Where was Azmati at this point?

JOHNSON
It's all gets really hazy. I have vague recollections of Azmati. Collecting artifacts. Then there was an attack. An explosion. Azmati taking cover with me, that's all I remember. I don't know what happened to him, or for that matter what happened next.

LT. COL MONTGOMERY
At what point did you call in the airstrike?

JOHNSON
I don't remember.

Let me tell you something that you don't know. When we went up to do a BDA we found a whole spread of JDAMS and cluster bombs fused into the rock, unexploded. Just sitting there, frozen in space and time. XXXXXXX

The unit that found you reported that you were dazed and muttering strange things. Not all of them in English. One thing they could understand. You kept insisting you were "brother to a prince and fellow to a beggar." What does that mean?

JOHNSON
kipling.

And why are you smiling?

JOHNSON
Kipling knew this place was special.

LT. COL. MONTGOMERY
I saw that movie. Some weird cult tribe thinks that Sean Connery is tha reincarnation of Alexander the Great.

JOHNSON
Alexander came to this country in search of an oracle, one said to possess wisdom beyond the ages. Obsessed, he marched his army to the top of the Hindu Kush Mountains. No European had ever been there before. They believed you could see the river ocean that surrounded the world from here. He showed all of them that the world went on and on ... And nobody knows if he ever found the oracle.

LT. ROLLINS
And that pertains to this case how?

JOHNSON
I think I found what Alexander was looking for.
