OPERATION: BLUE CHRISTMAS
Sitrep by Calico007
The Irish Resistance Community party date was set: Saturday, 10th December 2016. How do you celebrate a party? Well, beer helps, but if it's a resistance christmas party there's no better way to celebrate than putting a BAF up over Dublin city and getting some badges for people. So the word went out, and all ideas for plans and availability were welcome. Lots of people started to put their hands up to help. It was a great start.
I had a look at intel and could see some openings in certain areas, so I made a suggestion and suddenly the suggestion became the beginning of a plan. After a few tweaks to the initial idea, and scrambling around to see who had keys for what, it began to look like this was actually possible.
The plan looked easy enough to begin with, but the Enlightened were busy in the week before the op and lots of blocking links started to appear on the southern corridor. There was more activity in the area than usual and we almost wondered if they knew we were up to something. With 35 portals that needed to be taken out it wasn't clear if we would be able to pull this off. Would we have enough people to do all the clearing? The situation looked impossible, and I started to lose hope.
I shouldn't have lost faith. The resistance community pulled together. Offers of help continued to pour in, and some agents started doing advance clearing, making the job a bit easier on the day. Spookie1958 did a great job in north county Dublin clearing the blockers linking to wales, while gingercrouton and smilingpenance did some advance clearing in Kildare. Meanwhile malymiki travelled all the way out to Wicklow head to take it down, and removed a major headache by taking out one of the most difficult blockers in the op. We even got help from an unsuspecting Enlightened player who helped us clear a blue blocking link thanks to a great idea from Eehad to light the offending portal up like a Christmas tree to attract attention. The idea worked perfectly.
On Friday night, after surveying intel, and getting confirmations on who could go where, tasks were allocated to agents. The plan was starting to come together. Dillalio and bastet7 helped with key swaps.
T'was the night 'fore the op, all through the hangout
Not an agent was posting, not even PhazedOut.
With portals assigned to agents with care,
In hopes that the BAF soon would be there.
The agents were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of fields danced in their heads.
When, what to my wondering thoughts should occur,
Nothing, but BAFs, and illuminator.
Operation day dawned. Malymiki and haggaeus had an early start, with Malymiki taking out Roundwood, and haggeus trekking up to the top of Djouce. He got some great photos of a misty Irish mountain top, and all of this while hiking with his scooter.
Haggaeus was going to have a long day ahead of him, not only did he take out Djouce, but he had to make it back to Greystones in time to swap keys with the other fielders.
All eyes were now on intel, checking for any Enlightened player actions that might interfere with our plans. Some Enlightened players started to appear in different areas that could have impacted the operation. Spookie1958 was guarding the north and threw up blockers to prevent any links to Wales. Ecne and tulanian were on standby and distraction duties in North Dublin to deal with any actions that might disrupt our plans there. gingercrouton, smilingpenance, aoife18 and daribabe were on alert in case any agent became active out west. In the meantime gingercroutoun had some fun clearing some blue blockers by making some nice layered fields over Naas for additional bonus MU.
Agents starting moving into position for the final clearing. ManAboutCouch, DElyMyth and MaxKappel were our eyes in the sky, keeping an eye out for any new blockers and checking on agent locations. Guiwald, RandyGamer and RobotApeThreat had been on standby to take down some blocking portals that ended up being cleared pre-op, but their willingness to help was very much appreciated. That's the great thing about the resistance community in Ireland, everyone who was available was offering their assistance. We had so many agents who had prior commitments and couldn't join us on the day, but they sent us their support and best wishes for the op.
The Greystones team (alligatore, clocrodile, Bayta, B1GT0AD and aboneitor) met up for lunch and co-ordinated their activities for the operation. Haggaues was still coming down from the mountain at the time, and arrived at Greystones just in time to exchange keys. The Greystones team then got into position to begin the op.
Then it was time to begin. Daribabe, gingercrouton, smilingpenance and aoife18 jumped into action and began clearing their allocated areas. SuperZulu and Phazedout waited in Donandea to throw the link to Rockabill once the path became clear. Meanwhile Falconire, Debas3r and Loxycoon were in place waiting for the appointed time to do their clearing. Well, actually, Falconire and Debas3r managed to find a nice warm pub to sit in while they waited.
Then we realised we had a problem. Optim was sent to clear Powerscourt Waterfall, but he disappeared from communication channels shortly before the op began. The area around the waterfall turned out to be a black hole for data reception. At least he managed to get out a text message, which was relayed by RobotApeThreat to the intel team:
" can you let someone know if this sends I most likely can't take powerscourt as I have no reception here"
I was positioned at Glenview hotel, and being the closest mobile agent to Powerscourt waterfall I was appointed the task of helping him. So I quickly completed my clearing task and headed over to the waterfall.
As I approached the gate to the waterfall I tried to see where the portal was on the scanner, but nothing appeared - no data reception. Ok, I thought, I'll go further in to see if there's reception. The guy at the gate was giving me funny looks as I stopped and started the car a few times to check the scanner, but as long as I paid the entrance fee I don't think he cared too much. I still had no reception as I went further in. We were getting closer and closer to checkpoint. After all that planning it looked like overlooking one detail could ruin the plan. With all those agents hoping to get badges, and loads of agents in the field waiting for cue to do the final takedown, was this the end of the op?
I wandered around the area trying to pick up a signal. I hoped the small coffee shop there might have wifi, but no luck. Checkpoint came and went, still no signal. Not sure what to do next I headed back out of Powerscourt to ask if there was something else I could do. When I managed to get back in signal range the options were: try again or take out the other end of the blockers. Taking out the other blockers looked like the only option, but one was at the top of a hill, so it would take far too long. It looked like all those agents hoping for illuminator badges would be disappointed. The op had failed.
Suddenly from nowhere a knight in shining armour appeared in the form of malymiki. He had just finished work and sent a message that he was able to go to the waterfall, and since he had been there before he knew he could get a signal. Fantastic! The waterfall had already sucked in and spat out two agents, so all hopes rested with malymiki to save the day.
I headed back into Powerscourt to see if I could get signal again. The guy at the gate was giving me even weirder looks the second time around, "you were just in, weren't you?" he asked. Luckily he didn't ask me to pay twice. I managed to find Optim and the two of us wandered around aimlessly hoping to pick up a signal. Then our guardian angel arrived to rescue the operation from complete failure, and ADAed the final blocker. It was finally time for go, after nearly an hour of action (and inaction).
The path was now clear and the agents in Greystones began to close the first fields. At Powerscourt waterfall I was oblivious to all the activity that was taking place, having no signal, but malymiki, with his super reception, was relaying events as they unfolded. The first field was closed by allygatore at 15:34, for a total of 532,199 MU. It was a huge relief to see the nice blue triangle form over Dublin
Then one by one the fields kept coming in. More fields were closed in Greystones by Bayta, B1GT0AD and haggaeus. Haggaeus got a gold illuminator badge, while allygator, Bayta and B1GT0AD got platinum badges. Bayta reached level 12 in the process.
The team in Donadea then took over fielding, with phazedout completing another two fields to earn a platinum illuminator badge. This was a good going away present for Phazedout, who will be going to Finland at the end of the year, and many thanks to SuperZulu for driving him to Donadea. A total of 5,148,764 MU was achieved in 11 layers.
The badges and MU were all the result of the amazing teamwork that managed to make this happen. Thanks to everyone who was involved, no matter how small or big a role you took, your contribution was important. Thanks also to for making the game of which bring people together and encourages us to explore the world around us. Special thanks go to malymiki and haggaeus for going to extremes to help with the op.
Debas3r started celebrations early, continuing his pints with Falconire at Howth Summit, while at the Christmas party later that night the team celebrations continued into the small hours of the morning. It was a great end to a great day.
